I was disappointed by earlier reports today that the Governor was preparing to mandate closure of all beaches in the state. I want to thank our Mayor and Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Greg Cox for their letters to the Governor questioning such a decision, and appreciated the Governor’s announcement this afternoon that the closure order will only apply to beaches where there were violations of the social-distancing guidelines.
The vast majority of San Diegans appear to have complied with social distancing and other official guidelines during the limited beach openings this week, and I think it would have been unfair to penalize them for whatever violations occurred in Orange County. As long as San Diegans are adhering to local health department guidelines, they deserve to have access to our beaches and parks.
