Dear Governor Newsom

82 days until voting starts

Two weeks ago, I opposed an unfunded ordinance to extend a moratorium on tenant evictions, while the Governor continues to impose a similar moratorium statewide. I’d like to explain why.

I have great empathy for those whose ability to pay rent has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. But eventually, those rent payments will come due, and the City’s ability to fund meaningful rent relief is so limited that we must conduct a lottery to determine eligibility. This is inherently unfair and, candidly, a fatal flaw in continuing the eviction moratorium.

The longer tenants don’t pay rent, the more they will owe, and the more precarious the condition of property owners who have to continue making mortgage payments.

What advocates of extending the moratorium don’t tell tenants is that unfunded moratoriums will stick them with a massive bill they can’t pay, and an eviction notice, at the end of the moratorium.

That’s why I recently wrote a letter to Governor Newsom requesting the state use its resources to “provide direct rental assistance to tenants coupled with the state's extension of the eviction moratorium.” This is the only way to honestly protect renters and landlords.

With businesses closing again, and a financial tsunami hitting San Diego’s shoreline, I don’t mind taking a little heat to tell the truth.

I got several multi-million dollar businesses off the ground by making hard decisions and looking to the future.

I have laid out a roadmap to re-starting San Diego’s economy and building a future that is brighter than ever.

READ THE ROADMAP TO RECOVERY

It will require a Mayor who has a track record of success in creating jobs and who won’t make empty promises to get there.
