Most people support fundamental fairness. Many people are searching for ways to find it. And all of us should support it.

As the #MeToo movement unfolded, I started thinking about what we could do about it here in San Diego.

In 2018, I called together the leading women of Athena and Run Women Run and the Lawyers’ Club (which is the Women’s Bar Association). One woman said, “It’s not just about sexual harassment, it’s also about pay equity.”

That's why I formed the Workplace Equity Initiative –  to address issues of inequity across gender, racial, and socio-economic lines.

The acronym is “WEI” because we are all in this together—women and men, employers and employees, business and nonprofit, government; lots of different employers.

The goal is to bring together a diverse group of San Diegans to raise awareness of sexual harassment and pay inequity, to equip those in need with the tools to address the issues, and to develop a code of conduct for San Diego employers. I view this as a public-private partnership, because I want to demonstrate that we can do something meaningful without passing a law.

No one, regardless of race, gender, religion, or any other classification, should be paid less for doing the same level of work as someone else.

We’re going to count on all of us to hold one another accountable. You need laws for things like increasing the minimum wage or regulating short-term vacation rentals. We do already have laws against sexual harassment. Some things I think are more effective coming from the bully pulpit and societal pressure. This is one of them.
